Jim was my big brother, a man of integrity, generous and kind, who in spite of battling ill-health, achieved much in both his personal and business lives. He was my childhood playmate and lifelong friend. Jim loved his siblings and we always felt safe and protected with him as our big brother. When our two younger siblings died he mourned our great loss with me, and was such a source of comfort to me. I revered Jim. His remarkable intellect combined with such humility was a gift he bestowed on the world. He was a fabulous raconteur with a broad general knowledge making it easy for him to converse on a variety of topics with ease and fluidity. Jim shared a love of sport, and in particular cricket, with our father. He could remember cricket scores and recall the game ball by ball with uncanny accuracy. He was our much loved “Walking Wisden.” Jim and I shared a deep bond. In spite of him living abroad through technology we were able to be part of each other’s daily lives. The last communication I had with him was sharing a virtual safari in the African bush - a much loved pastime of his. Jim loved my children Andrew and Megan dearly. He was engaged in their lives and followed their family’s activities and shenanigans with great interest. The overwhelming sentiment from the many people who have sent messages of condolence is that Jim was a true gentleman with a wonderful sense of humour who was easy to talk to with a sharp wit and intellect. I was proud to be his sister and will miss him so much. Love you my Boetie.
